An ectopic pregnancy is any pregnancy which develops outside of the endometrial lining of the the uterine cavity. Over 90% of ectopics develop in the fallopian tube although all of the above locations can be involved. The most common location within the fallopian tube for ectopics to develop is the ampulla which accounts for approximately 80% of all cases.

The ampulla is the long central portion of the fallopian tube lying between the isthmus (connecting to the uterine cavity) and infundibulum (proximal to the ovaries).
