Kawasaki Disease

Kawasaki Disease is an important differential in those presenting with 5 + days of fever. This study post highlights some of the most prevalent clinical features.

Stages of disease:

The American Academy of Family Physicians has described the stages of Kawasaki's disease as follows:

Acute: Acute febrile phase 7-14 days characterised by conjunctivitis, mouth and lip changes, swelling of hands and feet, rash and cervical adenopathy.

Subacute: End of fever until approx 25 days characterised by desquamation of fingers and toes, arthralgia, arthritis and thrombocytosis.

Convalescent: End of symptoms until normalisation of ESR. Normally 6-8 weeks from the start of the illness.
