Pericarditis

6

Pericarditis is a common cause of chest pain. Pericarditis is inflammation of the pericardium, the sac enclosing the heart. If left untreated, pericarditis may progress to cause a pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade. Cardiac tamponade can cause shock and ultimately be fatal. However, the treatment for pericarditis is generally successful. This makes it important to understand the pathophysiology and presentation of pericarditis in order to provide efficient management.

Excelente - obrigado. É importante fazer exame de troponina se o paciente tiver fatores de risco para um infarto agudo do miocárdio (IAM), mesmo achando que o eletrocardiograma é compatível com pericardite.

Excellent thanks - you must check troponins if the patient has risk factors for an acute infarct of the myocardium (even if you think the ST elevation is looking like pericarditis).

Thanks for sharing! The ST elevation in pericarditis is widespread and concave or 'saddle shaped'. I have also read that PR depresson is very specific for acute pericarditis.

This is excellent, thanks! For those interested in point of care ultrasound, the subxiphoid view with a cardiac probe is a nice easy way to look for pericardial fluid. Signs of tamponade are: pericardial fluid with diastolic right ventricular collapse, systolic right atrial collapse and a distended IVC.
